Parents' Read Aloud
at
Scranton Elementary

Nancy Zelenka, from Scranton, reports that the new Parent Read-Aloud Book Club, got off to a small, but great start! The first meeting saw two parents attend, but the second meeting (which happened on a day of freezing rain and cancelled after-school activities) brought two new parents. But the parents there brought the excitement and enthusiasm of a room full! They read together Mem Fox's book and then discussed it. Each parent received a book for their children's home library. It was a great start!!

"Lift off With Books"
at
Maplewood Annex School

Boys and girls at Maplewood Annex School in Bridgeport, CT eagerly counted down the days until November 20, 2002.

On that day, volunteers from Sikorsky Aircraft, who adopted the school in 2001, celebrated the theme "Lift off With Books".

As part of Reading Is Fundamental, a national literacy program, students in grades K-3 received a free book of their choice to add to their home library collection.

Sikorsky volunteers, all 24 of them, also took part in a Read Aloud in each of the classrooms. As part of the celebration, Maplewood Annex School was adorned with a 5 foot helicopter model, hovering in the entranceway of the building. Children in grades K-3 created helicopter mobiles to hang in their classrooms and school's hallways.

As an added treat Sikorsky Aircraft gave children a beanie cap with a propeller on top to promote the theme "Lift off With Books."

What An Exciting Day!
