Cornerstone
colleagues share a recent session with fellow teachers to discuss
incorporating the writer's notebook in the literacy curriculum.
Their PowerPoint presentation follows.
Planning
Janet (principal), Liba and Johnnie (coaches), Becky (critical friend),
and Melia (Resource teacher/reading specialist) met for lunch at Whiskers
to plan the meeting. We had a deep discussion about the differences
among notebooks, lifebooks, journals, writing folders, etc. We decided
we all needed to re-read chapter 2 of In the Company of Children
(Joanne Hindley) to get a better understanding of writers' notebooks.
Becky shared some articles and explained her vision for using writer's
notebooks. Becky had prepared a powerpoint for us to use in the presentation.
We began writing
in our own writer's notebooks on December 21 so we would know
how it feels to keep a notebook.
Reflections
from the Meeting
Our colleagues' responses were quite positive. There were many
smiles, nods, and utterances of agreement. Even 'Coach'
spoke up to help explain the difference in a writer's notebook
and a journal. The teachers were comfortable enough to speak out during
the session. Liba, Janet, and Johnnie found themselves finishing each
other's sentences.
Six teachers
asked for help in launching the notebooks in their classes. Our appointments
will start the week of January 14.
