CORNERSTONE INTRODUCED IN DALTON, GA

Coaches Betsy Helton and Krista Paige showcased Cornerstone to the Roan School community at its first PTA meeting this fall. They energized teachers and parents alike, as they talked about the specifics of this balanced literacy approach that will ensure their children can become proficient readers by third grade. They detailed the four years of training teachers would receive in their collaboration with Cornerstone at the University of Pennsylvania, and enlisted the involvement of parents in the literacy learning of their children by saying they would open their classrooms to the wealth of resources that parents can bring to instruction.

The entire presentation was also given in Spanish and detailed information was sent home via newsletter in both Spanish and English.

Two weeks later, Dr. Beard, Roan's principal, convened the School Council with representative community members, parents and teachers in attendance. Betsy and Krista provided much more information about the school's relationship with Cornerstone and the benefits to be reaped. Betsy and Krista report that everyone was "very receptive” and exhibited excitement with requests to come into their classrooms to observe the work in action.

Two months into the school year and Cornerstone is known by everyone in the Roan School community and expectations are high! What a terrific start!
