Storytelling at Stemley

On Thursday, November 15, 2001 Stemley in Talladega, AL had their very first Community Storytelling Night. It was a Success! Mrs. McKay our critical friend opened the meeting with an overview of scheduled events. Mr. Thomas our music teacher shared a "seed" story of his life and times using jazz music in the background to symbolize the speeds of life, sometimes fast, sometimes slow. Mrs. Badders our coach continued the evening by sharing a story about her grandmother. She spoke about the importance of family.

The parents broke into groups and shared "seed" stories of their own. The response was HUGE! Parents and teachers bonded through storytelling. Storytelling allowed all the people involved to learn from each other. The lessons of life were transformed into seeds of understanding. We laughed, cried, and enjoyed the evening.

Mrs. Scales our coach ended the evening by discussing the children's book Keepers by Jeri Hanel Watts and Felecia Marshall and speaking about the importance of this activity to the well-being of children. Parents enjoyed hot chocolate and cookies as and picked out a free book for their child.

Oral language development is very important to the reading success of a child. Just telling stories that have been passed down from generation to generation to your children can help your child become a better reader. Writing the stories down are a way to keep them as memories and pass the stories on to other generations before they are lost.

The Community Storytelling Project opens the door to a beginning of recording memories together. From this project we hope to accomplish two things together

  • Publish stories to share with the children of this community and encourage our children to become writers by seeing teachers and parents as writers
  • Provide the opportunity for teachers, parents, and children to work together on the same project.

Everyone has a story to tell. This is only the beginning of the Community Storytelling Project. If you would like to become a part of this great project, you will have a chance. We will have more storytelling nights in the future. For more information, please contact the school and ask for Chrystal Badders, Becky McKay, or Wanda Scales.

My Granddad
Jake Badders

Because I am a pitcher for Munford, my Granddad always helps me practice. He has taught me a lot of things.
He says, "You learn something everyday."
I still believe that!
He spends a lot of time with me. He is an Auburn fan so he takes me to all of the home games. He really likes to joke around.

A Special Person
Brian Hutton
5th grade

A special person to me is my Mom. She is special to me because every time there is something wrong she helps it or fixes it. Like the other day, I was sick and she made me feel better by taking me to the doctor. She got me some medicine.

My Mom
Nathanael Waller
5th grade

My Mom is special to me because she is nice to me. She puts me to bed at night. She is patient with people. I like it when she is nice to me. She acts nice to other people to. I am glad she makes me go to church. She is going to have a baby on February 1st. That is why I like my Mom.

My Grandmother and the Lawnmower
Malissa Pettis
6th grade

One day my Grandmother was trying to fix her lawnmower. Her employee, Freddy, accidentally flipped on the switch to it. It hurt her arm. I went to clean her house. Her arm was black and blue. It hurt me to look at it. She was so grateful because I cleaned her house. She paid me fifteen dollars.

Cousins
Abigayle Badders
6th grade

I have a story about my cousins. When we went to see them in Arizona, we went to the Grand Canyon. It was huge! We didn't get to go down in it. We got to throw snowballs at each other. That night we went swimming at the hotel. My cousins Will, Nicole, Kristin, Dustin, and Caroline lived there for over a year. They have lived just about all over the world. I love them very much. Now they live here. We get to see them more often. I love hering their stories about when they lived in other states. I hope they stay here a long time.

Flippin' Out
Michael Duff
6th grade

One time Jerel and me were at church and we were just playing around. Then he tried to kick me. I caught his leg! I flipped him up in the air and he fell on his back. He got right back up and started laughing. It was so funny.

Last year my cousins and I showed Holstein cows in the state, county, and national cow shows. I won 5th prize in the Showmanship category. At the State Fair, I won two 1st prizes. I received a $60 check in the mail.

Falling Teacher
Keelan Taylor
7th grade

A story I want to tell is about a teacher who fell off her chair at lunch. She was trying to get on to someone and she fell.

My Cousin
Marquell Johnson
4th grade

Once upon a time when I was two years old, I would draw on the wall. One time I drew a picture of me and my cousin riding a bike outside. We thought of a story called "My cousin and Me". My cousin and me are close to each other. When I need him, he helps me and when he needs me I help him. So….between me and him everything goes great!

The Baby
Christine Parrish
4th grade

When I was a baby, my Mom would buy me gig toys-plastic Scooby Do, tents, big sets of blocks, fake computers, and lots and lots of books. When she took the toys out of the boxes, I would play with the boxes and not the toys!

Little Sister
Kirby Williams

One day my little sister was swinging in the backyard and the chain broke. It fell! She landed right in front of an ant bed. She was so scared that she jumped right up and ran into the house and wouldn't come out.

The Monster
Seth Martin
4th grade

Once when I was about 2 years old, I got a red permanent marker. I drew a picture of a monster on the wall. I didn't get in trouble because my Mom thought it was so cute!

My Friend
Tiffany Hutton
4th grade

I have a brother. He goes out with Megan. I do not want them to break up because we are all friends. We wear the same size skates and shoes. We are best friends.
