Creepy Crawly Museum Tour - Julia Stark Elementary, Stamford

The first grade students at Julia Stark Elementary School ended their unit of study on creepy crawlers by hosting a “Creepy Crawly Museum Tour” for their classmates and families. Each class read children’s literature books such as The Very Hungry Caterpillar and nonfiction texts to spark interests and gather information. Students selected a creepy crawly of their choice to study and write a report about.  During the study, students also ran experiments and recorded their data.  They learned tier 3, content specific words, that added to the quality of their writing.  Dioramas, models, posters, and drawings created by the students and their families made the museum come alive.  Students’ used their creativity as they constructed things such as a model bed complete with bed bugs, dragonflies that hovered over a pond, and grasshoppers that disappeared into their environments!  Family members and students enjoyed touring the first grade classrooms that highlighted this extensive study on creepy crawlies.

Critics Corner - Julia Stark Elementary, Stamford

If you are looking for a good book to read, just walk into the media center at Julia Stark Elementary School and read what students have to say at “The Critics Corner”.  Liz Hirtenstein, media specialist, has created a bulletin board where students post their book reviews by genre.  This extends the students’ classroom learning time as they identify a book by genre and write a book review.

Daily Detective - Julia Stark Elementary, Stamford

The media center at Julia Stark School ties into the comprehension strategy of inferring with the “Daily Detective” bulleting board.  Each day, a clue is placed on the board and students must use their inferring skills to determine where in the world this could be.  As the week progresses, the clues provide more information for the students to infer the country.  Students who guess correctly receive a colored bead, which they can collect and exchange for prizes.  This is one of the many ways that Julia Stark School is reinforcing student learning across the curriculum.

Valentine's Day Dance - Downtown Elementary, Muscogee

Valentine’s Day was the perfect occasion for families to get to know each other better within our school community. Along with BBQ, chips, and drinks, and to the tune of “oldies” music, it was a dance to remember…a Father/Daughter, Mother/Son, Special Friends’ VALENTINE’S DANCE. Wish you were there!
