Cornerstone Literacy program director earns doctorate

March 27, 2012

Congratulations to Dr. Rebecca McKay who recently completed her dissertation defense. Becky’s dissertation, A Case Study of Second-Grade Teachers’ Comprehension Instruction, explored the dilemma of reconciling developmentally appropriate, constructivist reading instruction with mandated high-stakes tests and how four second-grade teachers confronted these issues through their selection of two active professional development methods.

The goal of this research was to investigate how the teachers described their comprehension instruction, as well as how they developed and reflected upon it. This qualitative study captured the teachers’ descriptions of their comprehension instruction and their self-initiated active professional development using lesson link and adult book clubs.
