Cornerstone Literacy works in partnership with schools and districts to provide a combination of research-based practices, direct in-school supports, and intensive year-round training that refines the essential elements of literacy learning. Springfield Public Schools (SPS) has been a CLI partner since 2002.

Located in Hamden County, Massachusetts, SPS is the second largest school district in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts with over 25,000 students (excluding charter school enrollment) in 44 schools and seven satellite alternative education programs. The district serves children in preschool through twelfth grade and 12 elementary sites have an on-site early childhood program. There are an additional 2,300 students attending four charter schools across the city.

The racial/ethnic composition of the district is 56.7% Hispanic, 22.3% African American, 14.7% White, 2.2% Asian, and 4.1% multiracial. Eighty-one percent of the students are eligible for free and reduced-price lunch, and 13% are classified as limited English proficient.

The district employs approximately 2,300 classroom teachers. Nearly 54% of the teachers have advanced degrees and the average teaching experience is 8.8 years.
