The Social Emotional Development of Children: Why Cultural Compentency Matters

“It is estimated that more than $2 billion is spent each year on students who repeat a grade because they have reading problems.”
—National Center for Education Statistics

As educators, we realize that nothing is more important in our work with children than ensuring that they are able readers, thinkers, and communicators.  We know from decades of research that effective reading instruction requires a focus on the overall development of surface structure cueing systems (the sensory portion of reading) and deep structure systems (the thinking portion of reading). Research and experience make it clear that children are more engaged, involved in their schooling, and better learners when there is an intentional effort to focus on their schematic (rooted in background knowledge and experience) and pragmatic (socially constructed knowledge through engagement) development. Given the ethnic, racial, and cultural diversity in our schools, teachers must be culturally competent, understanding how to craft instruction using pedagogy designed to support healthy, age‐appropriate social and emotional development.

The following presentation was delivered by CLI President Victor Young at the Delaware State Education Association's (DSEA) 3rd Annual Minority Leadership Training Conference on April 27, 2013. It explores the research underlying these claims and examines ways teachers can help their students dramatically improve their literacy and critical thinking skills using culturally relevant pedagogy. (Please note that this is a large file and may take several minutes to download.)
