What Do Good Readers Do?

Letter to Parents

This letter is an example of how a teacher might include parents in establishing the reader identity of his/her students.

Dear Parents,

This year our class will learn together as a community and share the joy of reading. Your child will have opportunities every day to broaden their experiences with text and develop new strategies for understanding. Getting to know each of my students is critical so I can support their growth and make instructional decisions. In addition to the variety of evidence I will gather, I would like to hear from you regarding your child’s reading habits. Please take a few minutes to answer the questions below so that I can help support your child in his or her journey toward becoming a proficient reader.

Sincerely,

When did your child begin reading?

Does your child like to read? Why or why not?

What types of books or other materials does your child like to read?

Does your child have any books at home?

Does your child have a library card?

Does your child have a safe place at home to keep books?

Does your child have a favorite reading spot at home?
